Was looking at The Guardian this morning and found this:
The 10 most influential driving games – in pictures
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
(Link if Kinja’d in comments)
While several titles are listed that I grew up with, one of my early influences was Super Monaco GP by SEGA.
What about you, Oppo?

I was heavily influenced by the original Top Gear Rally game for N64 when I was a kid...plus, full custom paintjobs!!!

Rad Racer was a constant in my childhood. The 8-bit Ferrari 328 was awesome, and even if it was the K-mart version of OutRun. But it did have 3-d graphics
Hard Drivin’ was one of my favorites at the arcade. It was an early open world driving experience.

List checks out surprisingly well overall and did a good job of giving appropriate nods to what followed. I spent a ton of time on most of those 80s-90s titles and their successors. I don’t have a whole lot to add on top of that for personal influence outside of a few oddball picks like Street Rod 2 (PC), Stunts (PC), and Rock ‘n’ Roll Racing (SNES).

A Race Drivin cabinet taught me to drive a stick when I was like 8 and had no idea what I was doing. There was a clutch, an H shifter, you could stall the car, you had to clutch in and turn the key to restart it...all others pale in comparison for me.

For me, it was Atari’s Pole Position as a kid and the first Gran Turismo as a teen, so this list is A-OK by me. I can still hear the voice...
“Prepare to Qualify”

Also no list of influential racing games could be complete without:

Came here for Hard Drivin’
Had a real clutch pedal, and you could stall out.

So true, but it never felt “natural”.

PC games aside (Need for Speed - I played almost the whole series until they went Fast and Furious, Colin McRae Rally):
Sega Rally taught me the handbrake turn.
Ferrari F355 Challenge convinced me to learn to drive stick, and that I needed a gear shifter with a cold metal ball on top.

When you’re 8 it was like the real thing. Now it would probably suck, haha.

Being a young adult/millennial, my influential racing games were Need For Speed Underground 2 and Carbon. Loved driving those riced up Tiburons and 350Zs as a kid. Though I liked Carbon more for the storyline and in general gameplay (didn’t do the canyon races much though back then).
